I recently purchased Betz White's book "Warm Fuzzies". The cover features delicious looking cupcakes made out of felt. I was inspired. I purchased a few sweaters from a local thrift store, some craft felt and supplies from the local dollar store, a bunch of ribbons on clearance from Michaels and a bag of "odds and ends" of trim from a fabric store.
I decided to make a couple cupcakes to take with us as gifts for family members this Easter Sunday.
The first stage of felting - in the washing machine on the hottest setting possible (which in this case is "Sanitary") and with some soap. The sweater I was felting was inside a zippered pillowcase. I also threw in some towels and dryer balls, which made enough noise thunking around in there to completely terrify the cat. After a nice soak in the hot tub everything went into the dryer on the hottest setting.
I stuffed the felt (this piece is craft felt, not felted a sweater) slightly with polyfill.
Once the felt was rolled it was pinned and trimmed.
Yes, my manicure is horrible. My excuse is I'm an artist - and I'm sticking to it! ;-)
At least I don't have paint or clay under my nails. Today, anyway.
Now for the sewing, basting on the trim and then the felted sweater cuff.
I modified Betz White's pattern slightly. I've added some trim elements that I think will look a lot like icing.
The finished product - two felt cupcakes, topped with cherries and sprinkles...
Trying out one of the "sprinkles" on the cupcake...
I think they are pretty cute!
Here's the final packages for Easter Sunday; the felted cupcakes, some jelly beans, cupcake themed magnetic lists, cupcake themed magnets (taped to the blue envelopes) and cards (not pictured) with a cupcake theme.
Happy Easter everyone!
